What is the construction and purpose of tailgates and rear lids?

Tailgates and rear lids are body components mounted at the rear of the vehicle that close the luggage or cargo space. A typical element consists of an outer skin, internal reinforcements, hinge mounting points, a lock, and locations for additional equipment. Depending on the car's construction, the tailgate may work with a window, wiper, license plate lighting, and electrical installation.

What are tailgates and rear lids used for?

Tailgates and rear lids are used to secure luggage and provide convenient access to the rear of the vehicle. In addition to the closing function, they also affect the tightness, noise reduction, and proper fit of the rear body zone. Their condition is important for the operation of the lock, opening comfort, and protection of transported items.

What is the construction and function of the tailgate lock?

The tailgate lock is a latching mechanism responsible for securely closing the boot lid. It usually consists of a lock body, a latch, mounts, and elements cooperating with the handle or central locking actuator. Its proper operation affects the secure closing of the tailgate, the absence of play, and the correct operation of the opening control system.

How to choose a tailgate for a specific car version?

It is best to compare the OEM number, body version, placement on the vehicle, and additional equipment, such as a reversing camera, wiper, or electric opening. It is also worth checking the color, mounting points, lock type, and any interchangeable numbers. For models appearing in pre-facelift and post-facelift versions, the fit with lights and trim is also important.

What symptoms indicate a problem with the tailgate or its equipment?

Typical symptoms include difficulty closing, the tailgate dropping, leaks into the boot, noise while driving, and uneven gaps after closing. Problems may result from a damaged lock, worn gas struts, a leaking seal, or deformation of the tailgate itself. It is then worth checking both the outer panel and the cooperating elements.

How to take care of tailgates and rear lids after installation?

After installation, it is good to regularly clean the drains, check the condition of the seals, and lubricate the moving points of the mechanism. You should also observe whether the tailgate opens smoothly, does not rub against adjacent elements, and maintains tightness after rain or washing the car. Quick reaction to minor scratches and corrosion spots helps keep the part in good condition for longer.
