What is the construction and purpose of main and central brake lights?

Main and central brake lights are rear vehicle lighting elements mounted in the tail lamps and in the central point at the rear of the body. A typical unit consists of a lens, housing, light source, electrical connector, and mounts. Their construction differs depending on the body version, so OEM number, mounting method, and compatibility with the car's electrical system are important when selecting them.

What are main and central brake lights used for?

Main and central brake lights are used to signal braking to drivers behind you. Their task is to improve the reaction time of other road users and increase vehicle visibility in bad weather and after dark. A malfunctioning element can cause reduced visibility of the braking signal and problems with the proper operation of the rear lighting.

What role does the LED module play in a brake light?

The LED module is a set of diodes responsible for generating light in more modern versions of brake lamps. It serves to achieve a fast reaction after pressing the brake, uniform illumination, and a compact lamp design. In practice, the tightness of the module, the condition of connections, and compatibility with the housing and plug of a specific model are also important.

How to choose the right brake light for a specific car?

It is best to compare the OEM part number, interchangeable numbers, placement on the vehicle, and body version. It is also worth checking the lens color, light source type, and connector type. For parts mounted in the tailgate or spoiler, mounting points and housing length are also significant.

What symptoms indicate wear or damage to a brake light?

The most common symptoms are no light, uneven light intensity, lens fogging, and visible housing cracks. In LED versions, partial diode failure can be a problem, while in bulb versions, damage to the socket or contacts is common. It is also worth checking for looseness in the mounts and signs of corrosion at the connector.

What does the correct installation of a central brake light involve?

Installation involves fitting the part to the correct location in the tailgate, spoiler, or by the window and correctly connecting the electrical plug. You must pay attention to the tight seating of the element, the condition of the seal, and the compatibility of the mounts with the bodywork. After installation, it is worth checking the uniformity of the light and the security of the mounting when closing the tailgate.
